PRODUCT REVIEW – Virbac ENZYMATIC TOOTHPASTE

by Melanie Thomas

I recently had my 6-year old Bolognese teeth cleaned at the vets at great expense. So I decided to brush his teeth after each meal in order to keep them clean and avoid the need for another anaesthetic in a few years. Also, I’m thinking regular brushing will keep his breath fresh and save him losing teeth as he gets older. I had a few brands of dog toothpaste at home and decided to try the Virbac as it just looked like the most professional product.

This product is ‘poultry flavour’ making it really accepted by dogs straight away. No running off at tooth brushing time, in fact he comes over to me and tries to get at the toothpaste before I even squeeze it on the tooth brush. I just use a human soft toothbrush to apply the paste and I don’t have any issues getting all round all his teeth. You can buy a dog tooth brush, if you wish.

I’m thinking that food particles left around the gums will turn to plaque and eventually hard tartar putting pressure on the gums leading to inflamed gums, decay and loose teeth. Removing the food particles has got to make sense. I did have an ultra sound teeth cleaner, but didn’t get on with it, the battery died, couldn’t be replaced, so it went in the bin!

UPDATE
What did my vet say?
Harry recently went to the vet for his booster and I said about cleaning his teeth daily, my vet said every 2/3rd day should be enough, so I tend to do it every other day now and all is well the teeth are clean.
